Rural Voices

Engaging young rural European citizens in a gender responsive approach to soil protection

Soil is one of the most valuable resources of our time – and therefore often a subject of debate. It is the foundation of all life on earth, as it provides nutrients for plants, stores and filters water, provides a habitat for numerous organisms, and contributes significantly to climate regulation. Protecting soil and land is therefore one of the key challenges for global sustainable development.

With the "Rural Voices 2030" project, educational measures and events are carried out in collaboration with young people in order to involve the general public in rural areas. The aim is to raise awareness on the importance of soil protection and to highlight its global connection to the climate crisis. Young people in rural areas in particular are to be sensitized to global issues, motivated to get involved, and empowered to implement their own ideas or to raise their voices before decision-makers.

Project activities

As part of the project, methods and actions are being developed that are specifically tailored to the requirements and needs of young people and organizations in rural areas. These include:

  • Workshops, events, online courses
  • Diverse and interactive educational activities, e.g., using casual learning educational installations
  • Mobile exhibition to accompany public actions in rural areas
  • Multi-stakeholder dialogues to disseminate the project approach
  • Social media campaign
  • Train-the-trainer workshops for facilitators
  • Debates with local stakeholders and political decision-makers
