Since 1998, AWO International has stood for reliable humanitarian aid – worldwide and in cooperation with local partners. During the Ahr Valley flood disaster in 2021, AWO International provided disaster relief in Germany for the first time and sought to reflect on this process with the support of external facilitation.
Together with the organisation, finep developed and facilitated a customised 2.5-day workshop that brought together AWO regional associations engaged in the Ahr Valley emergency response to share their experiences. The workshop aimed to reflect on “best practices” and “lessons learnt” at different levels – content, processes, and structures. From this, an action plan and recommendations were derived for strengthening AWO’s future disaster preparedness. finep rounded off its support by preparing a detailed report and presenting the results at the AWO executive directors’ meeting.
